CMS Revises Infection Control CoP for Hospitals
Published: Jun 27, 2012
With the recent final rule revising hospital conditions of participation, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has eliminated the requirement for hospitals to maintain an infection control log.
According to CMS, hospitals are already required to monitor infections and do so through various surveillance methods including electronic systems. The revised CoP at § 482.42(a) requires that a person(s) designated as the infection control officer(s) develop and implement policies governing control of infections and communicable diseases. The infection control officer(s) must develop a system for identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable diseases of patients and personnel.
