Violence Prevention in Hospitals

Joint Commission (TJC) accredited hospitals are required to address violence prevention, particularly assault, rape and/or homicide of patients and visitors within hospitals perpetrated by staff, visitors, other patients and/or intruders. These types of incidents are consistently in the top ten of types of serious events reported to TJC and alarmingly, TJC believes that violent incidents are significantly under-reported.

Violence prevention in hospitals is continuing to get a lot of attention.  In 2010 TJC issued a Sentinel Event Alert about violence prevention in health care settings.  The Sentinel Event Alert highlighted the prevalence of hospital violence.  According to a 2010 Emergency Nurses Association's Emergency Department Violence Surveillance Study which included a nationwide survey of emergency nurses between May 2009 and February 2010:
