CMS Announces One Year Delay for ICD-10 Compliance
Published: Aug 27, 2012
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued a final rule delaying the deadline for implementing ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes to Oct. 1, 2014. The one-year delay is intended to allow healthcare organizations, in particular smaller organizations, adequate time to get ready for the change.
The final rule also implements another administrative simplification provision under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by establishing a unique health plan identifier (HPID). Currently, when a health care provider bills a health plan, that plan may use a wide range of different identifiers that do not have a standard format. As a result, health care providers run into a number of time-consuming problems, such as misrouting of transactions, rejection of transactions due to insurance identification errors, and difficulty determining patient eligibility. The HPID will greatly simplify these processes.
