Joint Commission Releases 2013 National Patient Safety Goals

Published: Oct 24, 2012
This week The Joint Commission released the 2013 National Patient Safety Goals for all accreditation programs.  Both the 2012 and the 2013 NPSGs are currently available on TJC's website.  While there are no new NPSG for 2013, hospitals and critical access hospitals are expected to have NPSG.07.06.01 implemented by January 1, 2013.   NPSG.07.06.01, which focuses on catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), requires organizations to plan for implementation throughout 2012 and fully implement the requirements of the goal by January 1, 2013.

In order to comply with NGPS.07.06.01, organizations must use evidence based guidelines to develop policies and procedures aimed at decreasing or eliminating catheter-associated urinary tract infections. TJC refers organizations to two evidence based guidelines for CAUTI: Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals and the Center for Disease Control's Guideline for Prevention of Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections, 2009. Links to each of these resources is provided in the references.
