Office of Inspector General Issues FY 2017 Work Plan

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) has issued its Work Plan for fiscal year (FY) 2017.  The Work Plan summarizes new and ongoing reviews and activities that OIG plans to pursue with respect to HHS programs and operations during the current fiscal year and beyond.  This edition of the work plan describes OIG audits and evaluations that are underway or planned and certain legal and investigative initiatives that are continuing.  The 2017 Work Plan also notes items that have been completed, postponed or canceled and includes new items that have been started or planned since April 2016.

The Work Plan is a useful resource for health care organizations.  It is helpful to understand OIG’s priorities when planning compliance initiatives for the upcoming year.

Some of the new OIG reviews planned for this year include:

  • Nursing Home Complaint Investigation Data Brief
  • Skilled Nursing Facilities – Unreported Incidents of Potential Abuse and Neglect
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Reimbursement
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Adverse Event Screening Tool
  • Medicare Hospice Benefit Vulnerabilities and Recommendations for Improvement, A Portfolio
  • Review of Hospices Compliance with Medicare Requirements
  • Hospice Home Care — Frequency of Nurse On-site Visits to Assess Quality of Care and Services
  • Comparing HHA Survey Documents to Medicare Claims Data
  • Monitoring Medicare Payments for Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Tests – Mandatory Review
  • Drug Waste of Single Use Vial Drugs
